My board keeps asking what we're getting back from AI and I can't answer. Where does that number come from?

Short answer

The number comes from a baseline you take before you build anything. Pick a workflow and record how long it takes, what it costs and what it produces. Then run the AI-powered version for 30 days and measure again. The difference, in hours and dollars, is what you take to the board.

Do this week

Pick one workflow and record today's time, cost and output before changing anything. Take the before and after to your next board meeting in dollars.

My board keeps asking me what value we're getting from AI and I can't answer that. Where does that number come from?

That number comes from the baseline that you need to measure before you start doing a single thing with AI. If you haven't taken one, that's why you can't answer. The maths isn't complicated. Pick a workflow. Pick how it's being done now, how long it takes, what it generates, what the output is, and then track it after you've put the new AI-powered workflow in place for 30 days.

We worked with a builder recently and mapped out nine streams of different work. Across those nine streams, around 450 days of admin. The people doing the admin weren't administration. They were senior leaders in the team. In just a 90-day sprint, we were able to give 120 days back to their leadership team. That unlocked a serious amount of revenue-generating activity that could now be done.

If you're already spending on AI without baselines, stop. Measure what you're currently doing and then measure the uplift. Then hit your next board meeting with dollar values.
